Menopause

Read on for detailed information about how various oils may help alleviate the effects of menopause.

Flaxseed
Flaxseeds contain the plant lignans secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG) and matairesinol diglycoside (MDG). Owing to the ability of these compounds to be converted to the mammalian lignans enterodiol and enterolactone, which exert mild estrogenic activity when body levels of estrogen are low (and anti-estrogenic activity when body levels are high), it has been suggested that the consumption of flaxseeds may be of value in treating the symptoms and secondary effects of menopause, many of which are the result of low systemic estrogen.

A clinical trial (1) comparing the lipid-modifying effects of flaxseed with those of HRT also examined the effects upon general menopause symptoms. Through quantifying symptom severity using the Kupperman Index that measures hot flashes, outbreaks of sweating, sleep disorders, nervousness/irritability, dizziness, difficulty in concentrating, joint pains, headaches, and heart palpitations, this study reported that 40 grams per day of raw and cooked ground flaxseed was about as effective in controlling symptoms as standard dose of HRT (0.625 milligrams per day of conjugated equire estrogen alone or with 100 mg micronized progesterone).
