 | Evening Primrose Facts
The primrose has sunny yellow leaves that, ironically, unfold only during night-time, giving the plant its name. Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) has rich stores of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), a fatty acid that plays an integral role in maintaining immune and inflammatory response.
Scientific research suggests that Evening Primrose Oil may help alleviate certain skin conditions, lower cholesterol, and promote nerve health in diabetics. EPO is also widely used in European clinics for women suffering from premenstrual syndrome or breast pain, with very few side effects.
History
Most references to the historical use of evening primrose are to the whole plant as opposed to just the oil derived from its seeds. Evening primrose was widely used by American Indians to treat a range of conditions including gastrointestinal upset, asthma, hemorrhoids and female health conditions. The Native Indians also consumed evening primrose, including the seeds, as food.
